What You Need to Know About Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Premise

Star Wars The Force Awakens is the first installment to an all new Star Wars trilogy that takes place 30 years after Star Wars Episode VI Return of the Jedi. This time, there are three new lead characters namely Finn, Rey and Poe Dameron. Some familiar characters from the previous Star Wars films will also return.

The Main Cast

Rey – Daisy Ridley

Rey is a scavenger who lives in a desert planet called Jakku. Her character can be described as self-sufficient and solitary. Rey meets another character that propelled her into the Star Wars universe.

Finn – John Boyega

Finn started off as a First Order Stormtrooper and this character will begin the story finding himself in incredible danger. He will enter the Star Wars universe in a unique way.

Poe Dameron – Oscar Isaac

Poe Dameron is an X Wing Pilot who goes on a mission and meets Finn. Oscar Isaac described Poe Dameron as the best pilot in the galaxy.

Kylo Ren – Adam Driver

Kylo Ren is an original member of the Knights of Ren and the commander of the First Order. He is a warrior who is very strong with the Force and serves the Dark Side.

Supreme Leader Snoke – Andy Serkis

This character is a powerful dark figure who is Kylo Ren’s master. He belongs to the Dark Side of the Force.

The characters who are making a return to the Star Wars universe are Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, C-3PO, Chewbacca and R2-D2. The original cast members Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher will still portray Han Solo, Luke and Leia.

Production

Lucasfilm was sold to Disney in October 2012 and this was the start of the production planning for the new Star Wars trilogy. George Lucas gave his story treatment for Episode VII, VIII and IX to the Disney Chairman Bob Iger.

In January 2013, JJ Abrams was announced as the director for the Episode VII. George Lucas was still the creative consultant and he was in charge of telling everyone what to do and what not to do in the film.

In May 2013, the production took place in the UK. Michael Kaplan became the official costume designer and other important crew members were also signed in.

The casting started in August 2013 and open auditions were held in the US, UK and Ireland. In February 2014, Daisy Ridley was chosen for the role of Rey. The original cast members of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher would also reprise their role. The cast was officially announced on April 2014.

The production lasted for more than six months and it is now currently in the post-production stage.

Filming
In March of 2014, the pre-production filming took place in Iceland, which consists of landscape shots and sceneries. April 2 was the start of the filming and a second unit was filming in secret in UAE. The cinematographer was using 35mm film but some segments of the film were shot in 65mm IMAX format.

Principal photography started in Abu Dhabi in May and the sets were built at the film location. In June, the production moved to the Pinewood Studios. Filming also took place in Skellig Michael Island in Ireland and in a former RAF Greenham Common military base in Berkshire. The principal photography finally ended in November 3, 2014.



Release Date
The world premiere is scheduled on December 14, 2015 and it will be held in Los Angeles. The release date for Europe would be on December 16. Release date for UK and US would be Dec 17 and 18 respectively.

Music
John Williams was given the task to compose the musical score for this new Star Wars saga. The themes would be a return to the previous films of Star Wars, especially with the characters of Luke, Leia and Han Solo. In June 2015, the recording session started at Sony Pictures Studio Scoring Stage in Culver City. Orchestrator William Ross conducted most of the music for this film. The soundtrack is under Walt Disney Recordings and it will be released on December 18, 2015.

Projected Earnings
Star Wars will always be a box office hit and there have been reports that the worldwide opening could go as high as $540 million. Star Wars The Force Awakens is projected to surpass and break the box office records currently held by Jurassic World. Others predicted a much bigger opening debut that could reach up to $615 million worldwide. It could hit the $1 billion mark easily and even reach $2 billion if the film is really good.
