On a typical day, UFC Fighter Holly Holm, an American who hails from Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA spends her time training to be the best in the UFC Bantamweight women’s division. Being ranked #7 is no easy feat and seemed to come naturally for this 34 year old woman who runs five days a week, grappling and sparring twice a week, and doing strength and conditioning training at the same time. Holm, whose nick “Preacher’s Daughter” do raise a lot of eyebrows is really the daughter of a preacher man, and presents no excuse for choosing such moniker.
Holly Who?
Standing at 5’8 and weighing 135 pounds, the blonde stunner is a force to reckon with. Her record of 9-0, and 6 wins by knockout is a remarkable feat. Holly, who retired from the boxing world 33-2-3 (9 Kos) is a PRO since 2011 and is a full time MMA since the year 2013. She held numerous world titles in boxing and she ranked top 1 in many organizations; also being No. 1 in multiple weight classes, among them in the 140, 147 and 154.
Mike Winklejohn, who was credited as her aerobics instructor, and who also taught kickboxing, saw potential in Holm and encouraged her further in the sport. In 2011, she defeated Chrisanne Roseleip by an unanimous decision in the International Kickboxing Federation and the USA’s yearly amateur kickboxing tournament. Her debut as a professional kickboxer occurred on June 1, 2002 at an IKKC tournament where she fought against Valerie Anthonson of Colorado.
She spent one year at the University of New Mexico before going to real estate school where she earned her license. To this date, Holm’s real estate license remains active, a definite plus if she decides to quit the sport; an unlikely move since the sports world has welcomed her with open arms.
Professional Boxing Career
UFC Fighter Holly Holm, is regarded as the best female welterweight champ of the world and was named Fighter of the Year twice from 2005-2006. She became the undisputed world champion in June 2008, besting Mary Jo Sanders by a decisive vote. A brutal loss on December 11, 2011 from French athlete Anne Sophie Mathis, where Holly suffered a KO in the 7th round is considered a low point in women’s boxing. However, a rematch held on June 15, 2012 resulted in victory for Holms, with the taking of Mathis’ s IBF female, WBF female, and WBAN welterweight titles.
A Career in Martial Arts
March 4, 2011 was Holm’s mixed martial art debut against feisty Christina Domke, which ended in a TKO victory for Holm. The Preacher’s Daughter returned to MMA on September 9, 2011 where she defeated veteran Jan Finney by TKO in round 3.
Her debut against Katie Merril on February 28, 2013 resulted in more victory by TKO in the 2nd round of the game. Holm announced her retirement from boxing after her match with Mary McGee on May 11, 2013, where she defeated McGee by unanimous decision.
Holm’s fight at the Legacy Fighting Championship on July 19, 2013 where she bested Allana Jones by a kick knockout in round 2, surprised no one. Her further victories against Nikki Knudsen on October 11, 2013, Angela Hayes on December 6, 2013 and Juliana Werner on April 4, 2014 marked the beginning of Holm’s rise to fame.
The UFC
When Holm signed a 5 fight deal contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on July 10, 2014, the fighting world took notice. Holm’s debut fight against Raquel Pennington at UFC 184 saw Holly winning by split decision. Holly’s star continued to rise with another victory, this time by unanimous decision against Marion Reneau, known as the Belizean Bruiser last July 15, 2015.
Highly Anticipated Fight
Holly’s anticipated fight with Ronda Rousey, the current bantamweight champion that will be held on November 14, 2015, sends excitement to all sport fans. It will be the chance of a lifetime for Holm to show her wit, cunningness and skill to grab the laurels from Rousey. Her earlier training as a boxer gave Holly remarkable coordination and control, swift footwork, power and agility.
UFC Fighter Holly Holm, will come into the arena with a 9-0 MMA record on her belt, with 6 knockout wins and 3 by decision. Rousey on the other hand, boasts of 3 wins by KOs and 9 by submission. As an undisputed underdog fighting the “greatest fighter in the world”, as Rousey wants to be called, Holm can weave a miracle, as well. After all, being a Preacher’s Daughter seemed like an apt nickname for a fighter who started out small but ended up big in the world of UFC.
