Recreational Drones: High Flying Fun

Drones – An Army Of The People

I have never been any good at keeping up with the news, technology, the weather, or feeding my fish. When I heard about people owning and flying drones, I suddenly got this sensation of shell-shock, knowing that more than half the population can’t even drive their motor vehicle in a remotely safe manner. And here now they’re flying unmanned bots with guns…
Yeah, if you talked to me earlier than a week ago, and you asked me anything about drones – I’d tell you that if you see one, you are probably in a whirlwind of trouble, and that it was nice knowing you. I am most likely the last person to know that there are recreational drones, and even “drone hobbyists”. I would ask, “Who knew,” but I know the answer would be, “Everyone except me.” Let’s move on; I could drone on and on (take it – I’m here all week).

What Are People Doing With Drones?

Apparently the most popular recreational use for drones is photography. You can take some pretty neat aerial shots with those. Imagine that epic introduction to your favorite action movie when the to-be hero is flying into (or over) the town and you get a glimpse of the entire movie’s setting (hashtag: bird’s eye view). Get your drone arrayed with a nice fish-eyed lens, and you will be all the rave on Pinterest!
But seriously, these things are pretty cool. You can get some as cheap as $50-$100. Of course, these are nowhere near as cool as the ones for $500, but as a beginner, 0.5 megapixels may be enough to get the general idea of what you are doing and how to operate a drone. After all, you don’t want to start out dropping two month’s mortgage on a drone that you’re just going to smash into the side of a concrete building. Or worse – have it shot down by another drone (haha, I’m kidding… ever so slightly).
But when you do attain to such expertise and comfortability of droning, there are some recommendations:

Respectable Names In The Industry

GJI – a big name in the recreational drone industry has got a monster of a drone – the Phantom 3 Professional gives its users 4k video that can be filmed from up to 3 miles away and five advanced flying modes. The average price of this runs about a grand in USD. Doing a little digging around online can score you a couple hundred off the top (coughcoughamazoncough).
The Yuneec Q500 Typhoon has got a similar ranking with 4k videos, 12 megapixel camera. Its successor, the Typhoon H, is built for those more so into aerial videography! This one will generally run a couple hundred less than the GJI.
For the novices and the curious, check out the MJX X400W FPV. It’s good for those who want to start their way into aerial videography. It boasts almost a whole ten minutes of continuous flight, and can be controlled from around 100 yards away. You can actually see what he drone sees in real-time from your phone or tablet. That’s pretty cool, right? Not bad for under $100. Not only is that feature desired in videography, but also indrone racing.

Some Other Stuff To Do With Drones

Yes. Drone racing. There is a such thing as a Drone Racing League (otherwise known as DRL) backed by sports authorities from England, Germany and the United States. Here is the place you can learn “the basics of First Person View drone piloting,” or watch “trained” pilots gallivant their drones well beyond the highway speed limit through the most vicious obstacle courses. The UK’s first professional drone race will actually be held in London in June 2017. It’s quite a big deal.
A beginner’s racing drone can be acquired for around $100 or so, with the most absolute basic get-up for a quadcopter. Intermediate and advanced quadcopters can run from a couple hundred dollars more into thousands. And just like any other types of racing sports, there are mods for the vehicle and standard to which pilots must adhere.

Kids! Gather ‘round. Let’s Go Over The Rules Of Droning

To give everyone some boundaries, especially considering the sophistication and intricacies of drones, the FAA has legislated some laws pertaining to recreational andbusiness users of unmanned aircraft systems (otherwise known as UAS). Users who own an aircraft weighing any more than half a pound are required to register their vehicles online, whether for leisure, business, education, or in the public sector.
Failure to comply with these Federal Laws can result in close to $300,000 worth of penalties on civil and criminal levels combined. Let’s not talk about jail (in which you can score up to three years). I mean, it only costs $5 to register. The tax on your copter costs more than that. Sacrifice the venti iced caramel macchiato with whipped cream for the sake of your freedom, and register your weapon of mass photography, guys!
To keep from seeming suspicious or getting arrested for frivolous reasons, there are some general guidelines to follow:
  • Do not fly near people or property that may damage easily. Have the decency to give individuals about 25 feet of space (or the delicate property) to not raise any hairs.
  • If you are within 5 miles of an airport or heliport, be sure to report that you are flying a drone in their airspace (remember what I said about having your drone shot down).
  • Do not fly above buildings when possible, and try to stay under 400 feet in the air.
  • Don’t catch a DUI or a narcs charge while you’re piloting (yes, those are possible).
  • Don’t fly near powerlines or other similar areas.
  • Don’t fly in bad weather…
Most of these are common sense, but good to keep consciously in mind.

To Drone, or Not to Drone?

Black Friday is coming up. Undoubtedly we can all catch some great sales on some drones. Now is the perfect time to step up your recreation from basic to freaking amazing.
Don’t hurt nobody!

Bad Advice With Staci Monroe

http://thethrillsociety.com is your link to Thrilling Stuff! This article is just a taste!

Hello and Welcome to Bad Advice, column where I, Staci Monroe, do my best not to lose interest in your questions halfway through reading them and start fantasizing about that Burrito I had last night. Damn, that was a good burrito. Anyway, let’s dive right in, shall we?
I have reached middle age and it’s all downhill from here. My wife is encouraging me to get a BMW, so as to focus my mid-life crisis energy and dissuade me from getting more tattoos. While I like BMWs, I also like Mustangs. She does not like Mustangs. Is it true that “Mustangs are for douche bags” and that “Owning a Mustang is a sign that you have a small penis”? Because while I do have a small penis, I do not want to be a douche bag. – Nick, Minneapolis
Nick, Get the Mustang. Yes, while it is a scientifically proven fact that Mustang owners are poorly endowed douche bags, that is not the Mustang’s fault. The Mustang calls to all of us, It’s siren song beckoning us to our watery graves. A stronger man, A man not in the throes of his midlife crisis, would tell his crew to strap him to the mizzen mast and not let him free no matter what he said. “Sail until you reach the beautiful wind swept shores of Retirement Island.” You’d call. The land where you hob nob on golf courses with doctors and lawyers, you all drive BMWs, and you never even think about sleeping with your female caddy. Because that’s the real issue here, isn’t it? Sure, a man can like both a BMW and a Mustang, but for different reasons entirely. To you, a BMW says retirement, old age, the end of the line. While a Mustang screams power, danger and the possibility of getting to sleep with someone else. Your wife isn’t telling you not to get the Mustang because it’s a douche bag car, she’s telling you not to get it because she knows that with it, you’ll have convinced yourself you can get laid. She’s just trying to spare you the embarrassment Nick! Not me though. I say, embrace it. Because the only thing sadder than a middle aged man driving a Mustang to try and score some tail, is a guy sulking behind the wheel of a BMW. Every time you and your wife fight, your argument will always be “None of this would have happened if you let me get the Mustang.” “I wouldn’t have slept with that Barista if I had that dang Mustang.” “I could have saved that man’s life if I had that Mustang!” Spare your poor wife this emotional abuse Nick. I don’t want you having an aneurysm every time you’re at a red light and a Mustang pulls up, top down, girls in bikinis sitting on the back ledge, they aren’t even in the seat Nick, that’s where their feet are! They’re holding a surfboard. You can surf! Their boyfriends are driving, no shirts on, ridiculously muscled and tan. That could be you! Suddenly your rich Corinthian leather seat feels like fire ants against your skin. The high gloss wood panel interior finish looks like a cheap trinket, and your speakers are blaring at you. “You’re too old, you’re too old.” In Dolby digital 5.1 surround sound until the noise is so overwhelming you can’t take it anymore and drive off the nearest cliff into the ocean below. The siren song of the Mustang, Nick. It gets us all in time.

When is it appropriate to send a dick pic? – Chris, St. Louis

First column and I’m already tackling the greatest philosophical question of our time huh? Okay let’s get into this then. First of all, let’s dispense with the theory that men who send dick pics to women are of a certain social or intellectual class. It’s not true. Across the full spectrum of race, creed, socio-economic background and intellect, men are dying to show you their dicks. Like, DYYIIIING. It doesn’t matter that the cumulative collected female response has been the equivalent of that look your mom gives you when she’s telling you “I’m not mad, just disappointed”, they can’t help themselves. It’s a biological imperative. It is the great unifier. If “Dick Pic” could be a presidential candidate, it would win in a landslide. Intelligence has nothing to do with it. Don’t tell me Stephen Hawking hasn’t thought about sending a dick pic because he has! Now, I’m not saying that every guy DOES send a dick pic, I’m saying that they all want to, and the ones who go through with it should have “poor impulse control” tattooed across their forehead so we know what we are in for. Now let me back up a minute and clarify. I am, or course, talking about unsolicited dick pics. Because if it was asked for, you wouldn’t be writing to an advice columnist about this and would instead be posed somewhere like in your old grade school photos, your dick being photographed in front of one of those backdrops with the lasers on them, or maybe with the close up of your dick blown up and ghosted in the corner next to the full version of your dick. Double dick pic! So there is your answer really, if it is unsolicited, it’s a no. There are only two times it would be considered acceptable to send a picture of your dick. 1. It is specifically and explicitly asked for. 2. You are in the middle of sexting and things are getting heated. Now, be careful men! This second time is riddled with landmines! Sending the dick pic could kill the mood or show your hand too early. Women aren’t visually stimulated the same way men are. Despite the best dirty talkers out there, seeing your dick does not, in fact, make our panties wet. Treat the sexting dick pic like escalating warfare. If you haven’t gotten at least a nipple shot from her. DON”T SEND THAT DICK PIC. You don’t drop the nukes just because she sent you a winking emoji okay? Bide your time. In fact, I say, don’t send one at all! How many times do you think this scenario has come up? “Baby, we’ve been having so much fun. I’ve loved talking to you, getting to know you on an emotional level. I find you witty and intelligent, I’m really beginning to feel like you are someone I could go out with, one on one, on a date, and not feel like you are a total creep or will harass me or pressure me for sex the whole time, but you know what? In order for me to be really sure? Ima need to see that D.” One final thought on the subject before I wrap up my inaugural column. Think about what it means to you as well. I know, I get it. Some girl just asked you to send her a shot of your dick. Your ears are ringing and you’ve got a nosebleed. This is the moment you’ve been waiting for. Take a minute. How well you know this chick, Homie? Cause I am telling you the one hundred percent God’s honest truth. Her girlfriends are gonna see that pic. Can you live with that? Can you live with knowing that all her friends have seen what you’re packing? Can you live with the fact that if you do her wrong she’s going to send it to her girlfriends and be like, “this tiny-dick having son of a bitch thinks he’s all that.” Can you live with the fact that she’s probably gotten a dozen other dick pics just this week and you are DEFINITELY not the biggest? Can you live with the fact that you’ll never be able to run for political office? If the answer to any of these questions is no. DON’T SEND THAT DICK PIC.

The Thrill Of The Hunt: Bow Hunting Elk

http://thethrillsociety.com is your link to Thrilling Stuff! This article is just a taste!

There are very few things you can do with your pants on that are as thrilling as calling in 700 pound screaming, bull elk within 20 yards. The experience will leave you shaking at the knees.
There are basically three ways of bow hunting an elk; stalking, calling, and ambushing.

Stalking

Elk can be stalked. It is difficult, but it can be done. A bow hunter can locate an elk by calling it or observing it from afar and then start stalking or slow stalking in heavy timber without an elk spotted.
Lets examine slow stalking first. This technique is generally used when you are in an elk area, but don’t have an elk located. This is a great technique for afternoon hunting. The usual pattern for elk is to eat all night, move to their day bedding area in the morning, sleep all day, and in the evening start moving to their feeding area.
During bow season the weather is generally warm so elk will be bedded on a north-facing slope in heavy timber. The idea is to spot an elk before it spots you. You must move slowly and quietly. I will walk ten feet, stop behind a tree, scan the area thoroughly, and then walk another ten feet. When I come to the top of a hill or rising terrain I carefully scan ahead before totally exposing my body on the higher elevation. Scan the area for parts of elk like an ear or horn not for a complete elk body.

Calling

Lets examine locating an elk by calling. A hunter basically has a cow call or bugle at their disposal for locating an elk by sound.

Cow Call

A cow call or mew type sound can be used at short distances. Elk mew year around. If you ever get close to a herd you will hear a lot of mewing especially at night. Cow calling can be very effective on bulls or cows. I have had elk come right into bow range with a cow call and I have had them hang up out of sight waiting for the caller to show themselves. If an elk hangs up a technique I have used several times is quickly backing up, finding an open area, erecting a Montana Decoy, and then back up an additional 20 yards behind the decoy. Next position yourself in a good ambush location and call away from the elk or in softer volume. The idea is to fool the elk that you are moving away. If the elk follows you it will see the Montana decoy and hopefully start to feel more comfortable with the situation and move closer for a shot.
I have used cow calls every 15 minutes are so as I have slow-stalked in heavy timber with success. If an elk cow calls back while you are stalking you have a chance to use the Montana Decoy trick.
the thrill of the hunt photo
Be careful while setting up decoys. Make sure you are hidden during the assembly process. I have been sighted by elk a couple of times while assembling a decoy and then it is game over. I like the Montana decoy because it can be set up quickly and quietly. When waiting behind a decoy I like to sit on my knees instead of standing. Elk quickly feel threatened by a standing human, but a human on their knees can fool an elk into thinking it is not a threat.
I recommend learning how to cow call with a mouth diaphragm call to keep your hands free.  For short distances learn to make the mewing sound with your mouth.

Bugling

I have a love hate relationship with bugling. I have had elk come right into a bugle and I have had them run the other direction. When a bow hunter bugles he/she is really rolling the dice.
A herd bull with cows may move his herd away from a bugle. He doesn’t want the competition for his herd. If a bull continues to bugle, but gets further and further away you can try to pursue the bull. This can lead to a long chase that generally leads to a chance for lots of cardio.
If the bull is far enough away from your bugle he may just call back and stay put. In this case I would stop bugling, move as close as possible to the bull, set up a Montana Decoy and start cow calling. This is a higher percentage play than moving in closer and bugling. A cow call is not a threat to the bull and in his brain a potential addition to his herd. A bugle will threaten the bull and in most cases he will move his herd further away. In rare cases the bull with come charging into fend off a threat to his herd. In most instances I have found bulls to be chickens and run away or play the show me game way more than charging in for a fight.

After wolves were reintroduced into Montana bulls pretty much stopped bugling. I guess they found out quickly that bugling was calling in predators as well as warning other bulls about their presence. If I hear any bugling at all in wolf infested areas it is more of a ¼ bugle only heard from about 100 yards away.
Another situation I have found bugling to be pretty useless is areas that have high concentrations of elk. In these areas the herd bulls have cows and will not come to bugle at all.
I have used bugling with success as a locator by calling before daylight. When the sun does finally start peaking over the horizon a bow hunter has a direction to start hunting.
Be sure that whenever you are calling that you constantly check behind you. I can’t tell you the number of times I have had a satellite bull sneak up behind me during a calling sequence.

Ambushing

Ambushing works well if you know the pattern of an elk. An ambush can be set up in a tree stand or some type of ground blind. This technique works well around water in desert climates or near a wallow. Cow calling can work well with the ambushing technique. Just be alert for the elk that comes in silently.
