Lager: The Cold Brewed Beer Full Of Flavor

http://thethrillsociety.com is your link to Thrilling Stuff! This article is just a taste!

Making a Lager Beer and Types of Lager Available

What is a Lager Beer?

There are two main types of beer, which are Ales and Lagers. Lagers differ from Ales because Lagers will ferment at a much lower temperature and the yeast flocculates at the bottom part of the brew instead of the top part. With a much aggressive fermenting process, the yeast will produce a residual sweetness. Lagers also have a much longer aging process, which can take several months. Lager beer is much preferred by most beer drinkers because it is cleaner and clearer looking than Ales.

How to Make a Lager

Lager beer is made by simply fermenting the beer at a much lower temperature. It may sound simple but you have to be attentive to every detail to create a crisp and clean beer flavor. You should have the right tools and follow the steps accordingly without any mistakes.

Build a Yeast Starter

Making a yeast starter is very important because the yeast will be working at a much lower temperature. This is how you make a yeast starter:
  • Pour 1.9 liters or half a gallon of water into a stockpot and heat it up to 170 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Put half a pound of malt extract, stir it in and bring it to a boil.
  • Let the water boil for about 10 minutes.
  • Let the water cool down as quick as possible to about 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Pour it into a sanitized container and put the yeast in as well.
  • You will wait 2 to 3 days for the yeast to propagate before brewing.

Pitch Yeast Starter Into the 60F – 65F Range

When the fermentation starts, you have to drop to the recommended temperature of your yeast, which can be as low as 45 degrees Fahrenheit. You can place your fermentation vessel into an ice chest that has a thermostat.

2 Weeks Fermentation

Fermentation will take about 2 weeks. After 2 weeks or after fermentation, you should raise the temperature to as close as 62 degrees Fahrenheit. This stage is called the Diacetyl Rest wherein the increased temperature will assure the fermentation is complete and drive off the remaining CO2 that might disrupt the flavor. The increased temperature will also allow the yeast to completely absorb the diacetyl produced by the fermentation.

Rack the Beer Into a Carboy

After two or three days at 62 degrees Fahrenheit, it is time to rack the beer into a carboy. The temperature should be lowered by about 5 degrees Fahrenheit a day until it reaches 35 degrees Fahrenheit. Lagering has started and this process can be done for a minimum of six weeks.

Bottle the Beer

After lagering or the secondary fermentation process, you can now bottle the beer or put it in a keg. Lager beer should look clean and clear.

Types of Lager Beer

Pale Lagers

Pale lagers are the most basic beers that most Americans know. This type of lager is light-colored and corn or rice is added to the barley mixture during the brewing process. It contains about 4 to 5 percent alcohol by volume and designed to be served very cold.

American Dark Lagers

This type of lager is the counterpart of the German Dark Lagers. However, AmericanDark Lagers are not as rich and malty flavored as the Germans. Some US breweries add spices or different variations of malt, hops and yeast.

Bock Beer

The flavor of Bock beer is quite intense with a hard bitterness and a malty sweetness. It is mostly dark but it can range in color with a touch of sweetness to it’s taste.

Eisbock

The Eisbock is a subcategory of Bock beer but this one is the strongest available. This type of beer is made by placing the fermented beer to a subfreezing temperature. The brewers can then take out the water crystals that formed in the beer. The beer that is left behind is now a more concentrated version.

Dortmunder Export

This type of beer originated in Dortmund, Germany. The color is pale gold and it has the malty flavor of Munich Helles and the crispiness of German Pilsner. It is referred to as export because of the alcoholic strength of the beer, which can be applied to other styles of beer as well.
Vienna Lager
Vienna Lager is malty with an amber color and medium body. This beer is more popular in Mexico with a well-rounded bold taste.
Lager beer has a taste quality that is cleaner and crisper with more emphasis on the malt and hops flavor. Other type of beer that is included in the Lager family includes the bocks, pilsners and dunkels. Creating a Lager beer is easy if you will stick to the instructions and follow the steps carefully.

Ronda Rousey: Can She Get Back On Top?

http://thethrillsociety.com is your link to Thrilling Stuff! This article is just a taste!

Poster child for Female Empowerment: Ronda Rousey

Imagine being a woman in a male-dominated industry, recently ranked #1 in Women’s MMA, and have a record of 12-1 . That my friends is Ronda Rousey. Also known as ‘Rowdy’ by her close family and friends. Plus, she’s only 29 years old! Makes you really question what you’re doing with your life. Not only does Rousey have an impeccable history in mixed martial arts, she’s currently ranked #2 behind Holly Holm, who dealt Ronda her only loss. Rousey has broken barriers in her fighting career for being the highest paid UFC fighter.

The Early Years of Rousey: Where it All Began

Rousey’s childhood was anything but easy breezy. She endured quite a bit dealing with her speech problems and her father’s suicide. At the time of her birth, Ronda was born with an umbilical cord wrapped around her neck leading to a lack of oxygen and slight brain damage. This eventually led to her difficult forming words and speaking until the age of 6. By the time Ronda turned 8, another tragedy stuck.
Ronda’s father committed suicide after learning he only had a few years left to live. As little Ronda grew up, she was homeschooled for most of her childhood. Ronda was not fond of school which led to great frustration. This frustration, her mother believed, could be well channeled into something good. Ronda then decided to learn judo. Since her mother was already a gold medal winning judoka in 1984, she began to show Ronda the ropes of judo, drilling her with knowledge and trivia. Her mother was really a tough cookie. Ronda’s mother worked hard to instill a level of toughness in her daughter.
Ronda frequently discusses how hard her mother pushed her into becoming who she is today by quoting, “I was 11 years old and I broke my big toe doing judo,” Rousey said, “To an 11-year-old this is a very big deal, so I stopped fighting and started to cry.
My mother then made me run laps around the mat for the rest for the night. I thought she was just being cruel at the time, but she told me, “Sometimes you have to fight when you’re injured. You need to know you’re capable of that.”

The Journey Continues (Rousey Kicks Serious Ass)

Rousey was named to the United States Olympic team at age 15, and at 16 she became the youngest American to earn the national No. 1 ranking in the women’s half-middleweight division. Although she didn’t earn a medal at the 2004 Olympics, she claimed gold at that year’s World Junior and Pan American Judo Championships.
After defending her Pan American Judo Championship title in 2006, Rousey became the first American woman in 12 years to earn a World Championship medal by finishing second in the 2007 tournament. She then won gold at the 2007 Pan American Games, despite a torn knee meniscus. After earning the bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics, she retired from judo at age 21.
After retiring, Ronda was left confused as to what to do next. Ronda began working as a bartender and even lived in her car for some time. Can you imagine Ronda Rousey living in a car? Neither can we. In 2010, Rousey joined the Glendale Fighting Club, making her debut in martial arts. This is where it really began. By 2012, Rousey was named Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion beating her opponent in a mere 4 minutes and 27 seconds!
At this point in her career, Rousey began famously for her trash-talking of her opponents and her good looks. She started appearing in magazines, talk shows, and the works. By 2013, Rousey appeared in Maxim and announced her plans to take her career in a new direction: acting! Rousey then appeared in Furious 7, Entourage, and The Expendables 3.

Fighter, model, actress… Author?

Ronda later came out with an autobiography in 2015 titled, “My Fight/Your Fight.” She went into detail about how the fame wasn’t all it looks to be. It’s not at all glitz and glamor, saying she struggled with a pot and Vicodin addiction paired with heavy drinking. Ronda is the perfect example for rags to riches story with a twist in addiction. Ronda refuses to discuss her father in the book or in any interview saying she does not want to repeat it because she’ll get too detached from the event.

Success Story

When Ronda first started fighting, she earned 400 dollars per fight. Now she earns up to 1 million dollars on a pay-per-view event! Ronda Rousey has shown all of us that if you work hard enough, anything is possible. Can she regain her #1 ranking? With Ronda’s work ethic and determination don’t bet against her.

Do the Pros Overshadow the Cons?

VR is fairly new technology which limits its accessibility to people. As it gets more widely available and as industries embrace the different ways in which it can be used, the pros are finally beginning to overshadow the cons. In fact, a lot of things that we heard may not be true about VR. Many people feel that nausea can be a problem, but with comfortable headsets like the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR nausea is hardly an issue when you are so lost in experiencing the world of VR.

Some of the advantages of the VR workout are:

  • You can choose from a number of apps depending on the device you are using.
  • If you have chosen to work out through gaming, then you wouldn’t even realize that you are working out. It helps in burning out some fat effortlessly.
  • You also get the chance to workout at your own pace. You can choose from quick sessions to lengthy ones depending on the amount of time you have.
As for the cons, the only thing that you may have to worry about is the sweat making the headset somewhat uncomfortable. Not to forget you should have all the equipment you require.

Equipment

So let us talk about the equipment that is needed for a VR workout.
Headset – A VR headset is required for the work out. Investing in one that is comfortable for you and will be easy to wear even when you are sweating it out is important. Try to check for the apps that will work for you so that you do not feel limited with the apps available for the headset you buy. At this time, some of the most popular headsets are Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR.
Gaming PC or TV – A gaming PC or TV to which the headset can be connected and the apps can be used. The specifications for the devices are different for each headset. Depending on the one you buy, you may have to check for specifications as well.
Other equipment – You can either use an app which takes you through sets of exercises which do not require any equipment or you can choose to invest in additional equipment like the bike built by VirZoom game. Another one is being designed by German design company, Hyve and it is known as Icaros. These equipment take VR workout to the next level because you can either cycle on the bike to enjoy a VR game with the headset strapped on and you wouldn’t even realize how fun cycling got for you, and then there is Icaros which intends to take you through ocean dives and interstellar flights.

Where Can I Do A VR Workout in USA?

Since VR technology is still at its nascent stages, especially in the world of fitness, there aren’t a lot of gyms that are currently offering VR workouts. However, the best place to try it out is at the comfort of your home where you can work at your own pace and track your success through the different apps. With your own VR gear and equipment the advantage of VR workouts are that you can do it at your own house.

Conclusion

VR has definitely arrived and it is here to stay. We have enjoyed the experience and we know that workouts could only get better, especially if you live in a crowded city where you cannot step out for a walk or a jog. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages and the element of thrill ads to the experience. It also helps you embrace technology in one of the most fantastic ways. VR Workouts are your gateway to a fun way of sweating it out.
