The NFL has decided to uphold the four-game suspension of Tom Brady for his involvement in Deflate-Gate. The New England Patriots are blasting the NFL for it’s handling of the entire process.  Who is to blame?

Defending the NFL is TTS sports writer Saint Jimma.

Blasting the NFL for their incompetence is frequent contributor AirTractor.

Before we ring the bell and release our two debaters from their corners let’s review a few facts.

Rule 2 The Ball
Section 1

BALL DIMENSIONS

The Ball must be a “Wilson,” hand selected, bearing the signature of the Commissioner of the League, Roger Goodell.
The ball shall be made up of an inflated (12 1/2 to 13 1/2 pounds) urethane bladder enclosed in a pebble grained, leather case (natural tan color) without corrugations of any kind. It shall have the form of a prolate spheroid and the size and weight shall be: long axis, 11 to 11 1/4 inches; long circumference, 28 to 28 1/2 inches; short circumference, 21 to 21 1/4 inches; weight, 14 to 15 ounces.
The Referee shall be the sole judge as to whether all balls offered for play comply with these specifications. A pump is to be furnished by the home club, and the balls shall remain under the supervision of the Referee until they are delivered to the ball attendant just prior to the start of the game.

Section 2

BALL SUPPLY

Each team will make 12 primary balls available for testing by the Referee two hours and 15 minutes prior to the starting time of the game to meet League requirements. The home team will also make 12 backup balls available for testing in all stadiums. In addition, the visitors, at their discretion, may bring 12 backup balls to be tested by the Referee for games held in outdoor stadiums. For all games, eight new footballs, sealed in a special box and shipped by the manufacturer to the Referee, will be opened in the officials’ locker room two hours and 15 minutes prior to the starting time of the game. These balls are to be specially marked by the Referee and used exclusively for the kicking game.

DEBATE: Who is to blame for DeFlategate?

Deflate-Gate has turned into a giant, massive shit show that is covering Tom Brady, the Patriots, the NFL, Roger Goodell, Chris Mortenson, the media and everyone else that comes with in a mile of this topic in excrement.

However, if we separate all the nonsense and get to the root of the problem the NFL under Rule 2 The Ball, created the whole mess.

Why do the rules state that the kicking balls will be kept in a special box under care, while the game balls will be turned over to the teams before the start of the game? Why the hell do the teams ever get access to the balls except on the field during play?

By giving the balls to the teams to manage during the game the NFL is opening a window for enterprising teams, such as the Patriots, to create all kinds of havoc.

Why doesn’t the NFL keep all the balls under their supervision at all times? Problem solved! No Deflate-Gate! No nonsense from all the parties involved. Then fans could concentrate on their favorite team instead of all this nonsense.

Looking at the above table of football pressures why are there such a huge differences in PSI? Patriot’s ball 7 has a .45 PSI difference between the two pressure readings. Are they using a $1.99 tire gauge bought off the clearance rack at the local convience store? The NFL makes billions a year. They should have calibrated gauges that can accurately read out to four decimal places.

The NFL created this whole mess with vague, easily tampered with rules.

So I guess you are taking the classic, it is my parents fault and not my own? Look if you were lying on the leather couch and hashing it out with your psychiatrist about DeFlategate, no judgments here. I applaud you for getting the help you seek and need.

I think next time a cop pulls me over for running a stop sign, I will tell him that wouldn’t of happened if the city did not put a stop sign there. Or when my kid trips over the carpet (and he does cause he is only 16 months) I will feel bad for not having wooden floors. How about the guy or gal that steals someone’s food in the community fridge and thinks to themselves, “This wouldn’t have happen if they hadn’t brought their lunch in to work today.”

Point is that the National Football League has rules. The National Football League is a job for select individuals, and those select individuals get paid more than me, you and most likely anyone else reading this…..COMBINED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The National Football League deals with grown as men. The National Football League deals with paid employees who are should take responsibility for their actions. Why is this even a debate? If the commissioner says you are suspended, and then guess what, you are. The rules were broken by a grown ass man. He was caught. So step up, take your lumps like a man and get on with it. You don’t need your coach, your owner, your wife, or any sports writer or fan to come to your aid, YOU ARE A GROWN ASS MAN.

Most of us, when we get caught, cheating, lying or altering the rules at work to make it better for us,  get FIRED!!!!!! He got suspended for four f@cking games. That is it. He still is getting paid, he still has a golden parachute attached to him and he still gets to go home to a big house and hot wife. If I had anyone one of those three things I would deflate some balls at work (wait that doesn’t sound right?!) What say ye?

The only statement I can agree with you on is the fact the NFL has rules. Yes the NFL has rules and as I pointed out, has a very vague set of rules. Their rule opened the door for an enterprising team to cheat. The NFL’s rule created the whole problem. I am surprised this hasn’t happened many times before.

Basically what your saying is the NFL is all powerful, can’t be questioned and if you want to play in the NFL you had better follow the rules even if the rules are poorly constructed.

Nothing in life is absolute. The NFL can be questioned and should modify the rule to control the balls more and take the pressure issue totally out of play. The NFL needs to monitor their own game and be 100% responsible for the balls.

For anything to survive they must grow and adapt. The NFL needs to not only change this rule, but scour their entire rule book to find other possible loopholes.

The NFL needs to look at themselves and how they created this issue, how they handled this issue, and how they will keep the issue from happening in the future. Because at this point they have totally botched all three issues and created a very embarrassing situation.

You mentioned that Tom Brady has only a four game suspension. Well that four game suspension could be the difference between making the playoffs and not making the playoffs. A four games suspension is not a slap on the wrist. It is a season changer. It is almost impossible to replace a future hall of fame quarterback.

Even when Tom Brady gets back in game five it will take a couple of games to find his rhythm. The Patriots will be behalf way through the season before their team is 100%.

I think it is ridiculous to punish a player this hard when the blame is your own. The NFL should have said we created this problem, we own the problem. We will modify the rule and this issue will not happen again.

Please tell me you are not a Patriot fan. If so than this debate is not really a debate. It is a act of futility on my part. There are three irrational fans in football and they are Patriot fans, Packer fans and Raider fans. All three never want to acknowledge the obvious and all three feel that this is their year, every year.

Look, i am not saying that rules can’t be modified to change or enhance the game. The problem here is one person, modified the rules to change the game to his favor.  That is selfish and deceitful. If Tom Brady would have come out prior to the game and let everyone know, the refs and the other team, that he was lowering the pressure of his balls (insert personal joke here) than fine. Everyone would have known about it. Andrew Luck could have made some necessary adjustments to improve his performance.

But he didn’t. Brady hid the fact. The ball boys deliberately hid the fact. Yes, it is cheating. Yes, he should get suspended for 4 games. NFL had to come down hard on Brady, because they didn’t want other people or teams to bend or break the rules.

Besides, how much more can we allow the Patriots to do such shady stuff. First it was filming practices and now this. And all the Patriot fans want to do is blame everyone else for their cheating habits. Man up and take ownership.

Coffee

We have teamed up with local coffee producer Hunter Bay Coffee Roasters for our new signature version of the coffee liqueurs on the market today. Not watered down and without added sugar or extracts (and is still has no gluten ). Even at 70 proof it tastes like a fresh brewed cup of coffee. With brick walls, “beetle-kill” pine floors and industrial metal decor, The Montana Distillery Tasting Room has a rustic Montana feel that is reminiscent of the days when 631 Woody St was the Garden City Tavern and The New Montana Bar. Our local business friends made this Tasting Room possible by lending their expertise in the overall remodel, bar and bathroom build, counter tops and cabinetry and our flooring.  Thank You to Ryan of Sustainable Lumber for our one of a kind, beautiful flooring.
