The Highs And Lows Of Finding Ambergris

Story provided by an

Australian Thrill Seeker and TTS Swag Winner

The Big Storm

On October 12,  2016, a big storm belted the 2,632 inhabitants of the small, seaside village of Port Noarlunga South, located 30 kilometers south of Adelaide, Australia. Port Noarlunga South is where the Onkaparinga River meets the salty water of St. Vincent Gulf.  The big storm created fierce flooding and left a wake of destruction behind in the form of tons of wood, sponges, sea grasses, and other ocean debris.

Catching The Beachcombing Bug

After watching a new’s program from the U.K., about a man finding a lump of debris on the beach that turned out to be worth $240,000, my son and I began walking the beaches around Port Noarlunga South. After six years of walking the beaches on a daily basis, we collected all kinds of sponges, shells, and other ocean related items.

The Discovery

The day after the big storm, we stumbled upon a small, hard, unknown lump in the sand. We dug the lump out of the sand, but were taken back by the stench and decided to leave it on the beach.  As an after thought, I conducted a Google search and found out that the smelly lump was actually something called ambergris.

What Is Ambergris?

Ambergris is highly, valuable material discharged by Sperm Whales. Ambergris is believed to be produced in a secretion of the bile duct, in the intestine of the Sperm Whale. Giant Squid beaks are often found in Ambergris, which leads scientists to theorize that ambergris is used to break down the squid beaks and aid passage through the Sperm Whale’s digestive tract.
Normally ambergris is passed with Sperm Whale’s fecal matter, but if the ambergris lump becomes too large and forms into an impassable size, it is discharged through the whale’s mouth as vomit.

It can take years to develop ambergris in a whale. Ambergris is only developed in Sperm Whales and is only developed by 1% of Sperm Whales.  Ambergris can float in the ocean for years before making landfall. All of these factors combined make ambergris a very, rare substance.

Ambergris Facts

  • Ambergris can range in size from a couple of ounces up to a record 110 pounds.
  • In 2015, a 29 pound piece of ambergris was found on a beach in Oman.
  • Ambergris is generally found on the beaches of southern oceans.
  • Ambergris comes out of the Sperm Whale as a pale color, but through time and oxidation develops into a gray or black color.
  • A fossilized piece of ambergris from 1.75 million years ago was discovered.
  • Most commercially found ambergris comes from the Bahamas and the Caribbean particularly New Providence.
  • In 2015, a 2.4 pound lump of Ambergris from Wales sold for $17,ooo at auction.

What Is Ambergris Used For?

In modern times, ambergris is used primarily in the production of high-end perfumes around the world.
Ancient Egyptians burned ambergris as an incense and modern day Egyptians use it for scenting cigarettes.
Ancient Chinese used ambergris for perfume production, as an aphrodisiac, and for food flavoring.
During the Middle Ages, Europeans burned ambergris because they thought the smell would ward off the plague and fight colds, headaches, and epilepsy.

 We Are Rich

After collecting several lumps of ambergris over the course of several days after the big storm, we thought we were rich.
austrailian-ambergris-the-thrill-society
We found some tests on the internet that involved lighting a small piece of the ambergris on fire, which produced a white smoke, confirming we did indeed have the priceless, whale snot.
Next, we took a lump of our ambergris to a local museum. The curator showed us a piece of ambergris that had been drying for seven years, confirmed that we had indeed had found ambergris, then asked us to leave immediately because it was illegal for us to have it in our possession. However, the curator suggested we leave the lump of ambergris near the back door and that he would display it in the museum.
Now all we had to do was find a perfume manufacturer that wanted to purchase our rare ambergris for exclusive perfumes and we were going to be rich beyond our wildest dreams.

Not So Fast

When we tried to sell our ambergris we quickly found out that in South Australia, the government owns anything found on the beach, especially items of waste from whales. The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 prevents the sale of ambergris in Australia. In the United States, The Endangered Species Act of 1973 prevents the sale of ambergris. Australian and United States laws are designed to prevent animal cruelty and profiting from animal products.

Now What?

So there I was with over three kilos of nearly priceless, whale snot in one of the few countries in the world I could not legally sell it. I tried explaining this issue to my eight-year-old son, but he could not grasp the issue. We had whale snot worth more than it’s weight in gold and could do nothing to collect on this fortune.
Without any legal way to collect our fortune and not wanting to go to jail, we buried our treasure, hoping for a change in Australian laws that someday would make us rich beyond our wildest dreams.

Utah’s Hidden Gem: Burr Trail

Please check out: http://TheThrillSociety.com It’s wicked Thrilling!

The Burr Trail takes the adventurous traveler into some of Utah’s most beautiful and extraordinary country. Views of the Henry Mountains, the colorfully contorted Waterpocket Fold, Red Circle Cliffs, and Long Canyon all await the traveler who wishes to drive this interesting back road. Numerous hikes and side trips are available for those with the time and inclination.
John Atlantic Burr was born in 1846 aboard the SS Brooklyn somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. He and his family lived in Salt Lake City, then later moved south and established the town of Burrville, Utah, in 1876. John Burr soon developed a trail to move cattle back and forth between winter and summer ranges and to market. This cattle trail through the rough, nearly impassable country around the Waterpocket Fold, Burr Canyon, and Muley Twist Canyon came to be known as the Burr Trail.
Today, the road which connects Bullfrog and Boulder, Utah, and which passes through the painted rock country of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Capitol Reef National Park, and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument land is known as the Burr Trail.

Champagne – A Reason To Celebrate

http://thethrillsociety.com is your link to Thrilling Stuff! This article is just a taste!

Before you drain that flute filled with bubbly stuff that we know as Champagne, have you given a thought to what it really is or how is it made? Champagne is for the elegant, one of the best ways to celebrate the big and small things in life. While getting tipsy on it is great, getting knowledgeable about Champagne is even better.

What Is Champagne?

The drink borrows its nomenclature from a region in North-eastern France which is called Champagne – the same as the drink. It is sparkling wine which comes from this region that is known as Champagne. If you are drinking bubbly wine from any other region, then it is not the same as Champagne. The name Champagne was used generically by many people for sparkling wine. However, the French seem to be very particular about their wines and they have maintained legal rights to call their wines Champagne.
So what is so special about this region in France? There are quite a few factors that make it special, the chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier grapes which are grown in this region are very well suited for creating exquisite and delicious wines. Champagnes are undoubtedly delightful, but there are many regions around the world that craft delicious sparkling wines.

Brief History

The history of Champagne begins with the development of wine in the region. In 57BC, the Romans brought vines to the Champagne region which, at that time, was not very popular for wines. The economy of the region mainly depended on wool and wine was just an incentive for the people to buy wool and was offered for free. The main rival for wines produced in Champagne was Burgundy which had a deeper color and was richer when compared to Champagne. The rivalry between the two wine producing regions lasted almost 130 years and came close to civil war. Eventually, Champagne gave up its endevours to produce better wine than Burgundy, and instead focused on sparkling Champagne.
In England, sparkling wine made its first appearance in 1676. With very little knowledge about fermentation, white wine was shipped to England from Champagne as soon as the initial fermentation stopped. It was shipped mainly in the winter season when the climatic conditions reduced the chances of fermentation. But once the wine reached the taverns, it soon began to ferment again and produce the fizz. The tavern keepers began bottling this sparkling wine and added some sugar to create some more fizz. This gave birth to sparkling wine from Champagne.

Dom Perignon who is associated with the creation of Champagne was a monk at the Abbey of Hautvillers and Dom was the business manager of the abbey who was given the responsibility of restoring the fortunes of the abbey. He noticed that wine can play an important role in this and designed a project of replanting and growing grapes to produce wine of superior quality. Unfortunately, he saw the fizz as a fault and tried fruitlessly to correct it. Although he is associated with Champagne, he can hardly be considered the inventor of Champagne.
Champagne today, is a sign of happiness and success. It has been used in movies and is often considered to be the symbol of extravagance. With more than 12,000 brands of Champagne, the drink has created a strong niche for itself and no matter how many other sparkling wines make it to the market, Champagne is unique and can never be undermined.

How Is It Made?

Champagne is a type of sparkling wine and sparkling wines can be made in many different ways. However, Champagne when created in the traditional way, is made by a method called Champenoise. It begins to take form just like any other wine where the grapes are harvested, they go through the process of pressing and the primary fermentation. A secondary fermentation is used for crafting Champagne where the wine is blended and bottled with some yeast and sugar. This gives the Champagne its glorious bubbles.
The yeast that is added to Champagne begins working on the sugar and it turns into lees. These bottles of Champagnes are stored horizontally and allowed to age on the lees for 15 months or more. Once this aging completes, the bottles are turned upside down so that the yeast can settle at the bottom. The makers can then easily remove the dead yeast that has settled and add some sugar to the Champagne which is known as dosage. A cork is slipped on and the bottles are ready.

Types of Champagne

  1. Prestige cuvee – This is one of the most exquisite Champagnes which is produced by almost all the top Champagne houses in France like Moet and Chandon’s Dom Perignon, Louis Roederer’s Cristal and Laurent Perrier’s Grand Siecle.
  2. Blanc De Noirs – This is a white wine which is produced from black grapes. The Champagne is produced very carefully where minimal contact of the skin of the grapes ensures the whiteness of the wine.
  3. Blanc de blancs – These Champagnes are created mainly from Chardonnay grapes or occasionally from Pinot blanc.
  4. Rose Champagne – It is created by the addition of a small amount of red wine at the time of the blending. This gives the Champagne its beautiful pink color. It is very popular in fine dining restaurants.

Conclusion

This delightful drink is usually served in a Champagne flute and is served cold. It is often chilled in an ice bucket which ensures that it is less fizzy when it is opened. The Champagne fizz is often sprayed during celebrations. Many sports winners end up spraying Champagne at each other to celebrate their success.
